As a California resident, you have probably become accustomed to receiving legislative alerts warning that your state legislature is debating new gun control bills.
But we’ve never seen anything like this.
As I write this letter, both the Assembly and Senate are poised to debate and pass dozens of new gun control bills – some of them incredibly restrictive – which only affect responsible and law-abiding citizens, not violent criminals.
Many of these misguided bills have already progressed in the legislative process. Some of these bills have already been voted out of committee, and others have been passed by one entire legislative chamber or the other. We must act now – there’s very little time.
What’s at stake? A ban on your right to self-defense in the home. A sweeping new gun ban, encompassing millions of more guns. A dangerous effort to erode hunting and the millions of dollars in economic activity and conservation that it brings – statewide. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Let me describe just a few of these attacks in Sacramento on your rights.
• S.B. 108 strips your right to self-defense in the home, by mandating that guns be locked away regardless of whether anyone is present. So when you hear that crash of glass breaking in the night, you’ll have to hope that the home invaders will wait politely while you fumble to open your locked gun safe – if you can even get to it.
• S.B. 374 expands the failed and flawed California gun ban to cover millions of more guns, including all semiautomatic rifles with detachable magazines. File this under “if we can’t figure out how to ban the guns we don’t like, we’ll just ban them all.”
• A.B. 711 erodes hunting in California by mandating the use of ammunition that’s not widely available. Banning lead ammunition for hunting will force hunters to use ammunition that is much more expensive, and is hard to find in today’s market. And if you think you can just buy it online, see the next bill below and think again.
• S.B. 53 bans all online and mail order sales of ammunition in California, and strips away the privacy rights of ammunition buyers by requiring a purchase permit, registration and thumbprint for ALL ammunition purchases. Gun stores won’t have any time to sell guns if they have to put every ammunition purchaser through this wringer of red tape.
• S.B. 293 gives bureaucrats the power to ban handguns. It would take ALL existing handguns off the market in California if a state bureaucrat approves the sale of so-called “owner-authorized” handguns. That’s exactly how the legislature managed to mandate “microstamping,” which has now effectively frozen the list of “approved” handguns in California.
• S.B. 396 criminalizes the possession of standard, factory ammunition magazines. All magazines with a capacity of more than ten rounds would be completely banned, even the ones that are “grandfathered” now. Owners would be subject to arrest, and the magazines could be confiscated and destroyed.
And as I said, that’s just a sampling. There are literally dozens of anti-gun bills that attack your freedom with bans, taxes, permits and registration, regulations and restrictions. Again, these deeply flawed bills would do nothing to target crime or violent criminals, but simply target the responsible gun owners and sportsmen in the Golden State. The debate is underway now.
Now is the time to make your voice heard! You must contact your lawmakers in the state Assembly and Senate. Tell the politicians in Sacramento to oppose any new restrictions on your rights. Then contact Governor Jerry Brown and respectfully urge him to veto any bill that restricts your rights. The contact information for your state lawmakers is below:
